Who is God? Do you know?
I know that you know something about God, because His creation is all around you. You were made by Him too! And His creation tells you how great and powerful He is and has always been. The Bible, His message to us, says that knowing God gives us eternal joy. Not knowing Him brings darkness, pain, and misery. Do you know God?
Do you know? God doesn’t need anything.
He’s infinitely self-sufficient. He’s not a lonely old man looking for friends. God doesn’t need anything outside of His own amazing, infinite Being! He has all life, power, and self-sufficiency. Romans 11:36 tells us, “Of him, and through him, and to him, are all things.”
Do you know? God doesn’t need a watch.
God is outside of time. He has no beginning and no end. He’s eternal! He’s not a fellow traveler with us, trying to make sense out of a world of eternal matter that he somehow got shoved into! No, He’s the Creator and the Sustainer. His Story is the ultimate story that’s coming together in this universe! “Unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever” (1 Timothy 1:17).
Do you know? God is perfectly holy.
God is awe-inspiringly holy! He is altogether in a class by Himself. The prophet Isaiah saw a vision of the Lord on a throne over the temple high and lifted up. Angelic creatures were flying around the throne crying, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of Hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory,” and Isaiah fell down on his face and cried out in shame, “Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts” (Isaiah 6). Do you soberly, solemnly worship this awesomely holy God?
Do you know? God is righteous.
God is too righteous to just let rebels against Him go free. The righteous God declares, “I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease” (Isaiah 13:11). If you try harder to be good, it won’t be enough! “All our righteousnesses are like filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6). Crimes against the eternal, infinite God demand eternal punishment.
Do you know? God is Love!
God is so loving He provided a righteous, legal way for sinners to be pardoned. God provided a full and free salvation at no cost to you but infinite cost to Himself! He sent His Son to live a perfect life as the representative of sinners and then to die under the penalty for sin He never committed! Jesus endured the most gruesome physical suffering, and was rejected by religious society and His own Jewish people. He was betrayed and denied by His friends. The wrath of God toward sin was poured out upon His holy Person! (Take some time to think about this amazing love!) The Son of God selflessly agreed with His Father to be the Savior of sinners before the world was made! “For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me” (John 6:38). “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Timothy 1:15). “Christ died for our sins” (1 Corinthians 15:3). By the perfect sacrifice Jesus offered for sinners God can blot out your criminal record in heaven’s public register! He promised to do just that for everyone in this world who turns away from their sin and believes the good news of Jesus the King!
Do you know? God has the power to do anything He wants!
God is so powerful He can and does transform sinners, even some of the most wicked, into the image of Jesus Christ? Not only did God create the entire world—not only does He hold everything together in this complex and multi-faceted system we call the universe—but He lavishes His life-transforming power on sinners by the Holy Spirit and makes them new creatures! Through the good news about Jesus Christ, every day the Holy Spirit turns people from miserable darkness to glorious light, from spiritual blindness to wonderful clear vision of God’s truth, from filthy idolatry to the pure worship of the true God, from wicked fornication to live holy lives, from hateful murder to sane and respectful care for others, raging anger to peace, crooked stealing to honest dealing! Jesus declared, “Ye must be born again” by the Holy Spirit (John 3). The Bible says that in our sinful condition we were “dead in trespasses and sins,” but that by the Holy Spirit’s power God raises sinners from the dead, makes them alive with Christ, and saves them by His grace (Ephesians 2). Are you alive? Or are you still dead in sin? Your eternal destiny—heaven or hell—hangs on the answer to that question!
Do you know? God is King!
Through His glorious Son, Jesus Christ, He rules over everything in heaven and earth. Jesus came and established God’s kingdom on earth when He came to this earth over 2000 years ago. Three days after His death, Jesus rose again from the dead, triumphing over sin, death, hell, and Satan. He ascended to heaven after 40 days, where He reigns as King now over all the universe. He will return a second time to bring judgment on all those who don’t know God, exiling them forever to the Lake of Fire. He will bring in the New Heaven and New Earth, where only righteousness dwells.
